Virginia finally introduces law to stop child marriages. In 2016. Jesus.

Virginia, USA has announced that they’ve finally updated their rules on child marriage. Before last Friday, children could marry as young as twelve with their parent’s permission and if they were pregnant.

It’s bizarre to think that this kind of thing happened in America – in 2016- but stats show that between 2004 and 2013, 4,500 children (that is under the age of 18) were married in Virginia. Of that same amount, 200 were 15 or younger. Scary stuff, right?

Activists have been campaigning for change in Virginia for a very long time, claiming the law encouraged forced marriage and rape amongst many other things.

YouTube prankster Coby Persin wanted to highlight that these laws still affected the USA in his social experiement video below, where New Yorker’s see a 12 year old girl marry a 65 year old man.

Horrifying for most of us to imagine spending our lives with the person we were infatuated with at the age of 12 or 13. And that’s assuming the marriage is voluntary! Thank God they saw the light…I wonder how many other states still have similar laws.
